A Blending of Nature & Science

pakari (Maori language):

(stative) be mature, ripe, strong, hard, strapping, muscular, well-built, sturdy.

Pakari

Pakari is our brand of thermally modified wood; a chemical free method of heat-treating wood with nothing more than steam, pressure and high temperatures.

The process increases the woods water repellency, insect and rot resistance and dimensional stability. This allows us to take wood species that are not traditionally used in exterior applications and makes them suitable for outdoor use.

After working with this technology for several years and seeing its potential we decided to up the ante. In 2018 we installed the first thermal modification kiln on the west coast, and the only one in the country that ran exclusively on solar power, which means you can keep project costs and environmental impact low.

Pakari Case Study

The Natural Resources Research Institute (NRRI), Friends of Sax-Zim Bog, and Pakari partnered to construct a wooden boardwalk at the Sax-Zim Bog near Toivola, MN. The wood for the boardwalk needed to be moisture and decay resistant, so a thermally modified wood product was a perfect choice. See more about the project in this video.
